A native of West Columbia, South Carolina, Dr. Courtenay-Brown received bachelor’s degrees in biology and computer science from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. She then earned a doctoral degree in human genetics and genomics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Miami’s Hussman Institute of Human Genomics focusing on gene-environment interactions in age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Courtenay-Brown went on to graduate from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and complete her ophthalmology residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Courtenay-Brown is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, the South Carolina Medical Association and Women in Ophthalmology. She has more than five years of experience providing comprehensive ophthalmologic care, including treatment for cataracts, glaucoma, diseases of the retina and vitreous, cornea, and neuro-ophthalmic diseases, most recently at Columbia Eye Clinic in Columbia, South Carolina. She is also the first Black female ophthalmologist in the state.
