Mark J. Sutherland, MD, graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a bachelor’s degree in biopsychology. He attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville for graduate school and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, where he also completed his residency. Dr. Sutherland then completed a cardiac anesthesia fellowship at Harvard Medical School’s Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, serving as chief fellow.
A diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology, Dr. Sutherland most recently worked as an attending anesthesiologist at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he chaired the Anesthesiology department and served on numerous committees. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and is a retired Lieutenant Commander for the United States Navy Reserves.
