Bio

Dr. Fortuna graduated with his bachelor’s degree in biology from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and earned his medical degree at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia. He then graduated with his master’s degree in business administration at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he served as chief resident. In addition to this training, Dr. Fortuna completed a fellowship in trauma/critical care at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and a vascular/ endovascular surgery fellowship at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston.

Dr. Fortuna is a member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Society of Vascular Surgeons, among other organizations, and he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Board certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery, surgical critical care, and vascular surgery, he recently retired from active-duty as a Colonel in the United States Air Force after 30 years of military service. His last assignment was director of the Center for the Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills in St. Louis, Missouri, where he also served as a professor of Surgery and Radiology on faculty at Washington University in St. Louis. He has numerous combat deployments as a trauma surgeon in support of Operations IRAQI and ENDURING FREEDOM. He also has experience as a Critical Care Air Transport Team member, a member of U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s Acute Lung Rescue Team, and Tactical Critical Care Team-Enhanced.

Dr. Fortuna specializes in vascular surgery as well as trauma and acute care surgery with particular interests in complex aortic disease, aortic aneurysm, aortic dissection and venous thromboembolism. His clinical research includes management of blunt traumatic aortic dissection, venous thromboembolic disease, resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta and en-route care of traumatically injured patients. He proudly joins the board-certified cardiologists, vascular surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons and highly skilled staff at Lexington Medical Heart and Vascular Center as director of Vascular Surgery to provide patients with the highest level of care in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart and vascular diseases.
