CANCER rEGISTRY

Jean A. Tooke, CTR
Cancer Registry Manager

The Cancer Registry at Lexington Medical Center serves two functions. Not only does it collect the data for the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry, as mandated by both state and federal law, it also maintains a concise record of those cancer patients diagnosed and treated at this facility. While collecting and reporting data on cancer patients in our facility, the confidentiality of each patient is rigidly maintained.

The data collected for the state is on all cancers seen at LMC and helps to determine the cancer burden for the State of South Carolina. These figures aid in the determination of funds that are apportioned to the state, by the federal government, for research, treatment, and other areas of cancer care that directly impact the residents of South Carolina. The investigations that look at such things as “cancer clusters” to determine if an environmental cause may be contributing to cancer in a designated area are paid for out of these funds.

From a hospital standpoint, the Cancer Registry serves as the data collection arm of the Cancer Program. All the data is collected in compliance with the rules and regulations of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The data is collected in such a way as to be useful for research and looks at such things as date of diagnosis, the stage of disease at the time of diagnosis, treatment regimen, date treatment was started and survival data.

As Certified Tumor Registrars, we are proud to be a part of the team made up of physicians, nurses, administration, outreach, and all of the employees of Lexington Medical Center who contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of our cancer patients. We will continue to give it our very best effort to see that the data collected for the Cancer Program is above and beyond the requirements of NAACCR (North American Association of Central Cancer Registries), South Carolina Central Cancer Registry and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

“Behind every national cancer statistic is a dedicated cancer registrar.”
